The appearing temperature of the coated letters is independent of the environment temperature (Image by Dr. Kechao Tang)
Wu group of UC Berkeley's Materials Science and Engineering department recently published a paper on Advance Materials, introducing a coating that is able to produce a deceptive thermal signal, making it's temperature much different from it's ambient environment.
Invented by Dr. Kechao Tang of Wu group, this coating uses a special structure that consists of a thin film of multi-layered tungsten-doped vanadium dioxide. The innovative materials structure allow the coating to emit infrared radiation that is independent of the actual temperature.
This coating has potential in military application as a way to trick enemy's thermal infrared detecting measures.
